Brisbane City Council is continuing to increase the number of ‘green’ buses in its fleet with Public and Active Transport Chair Jane Prentice launching the first of 85 new diesel vehicles today.
Built by Volgren and featuring Volvo engines, the diesel buses are classed as Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicles (EEV) and offer greater reductions in harmful gases including 46 percent less hydrocarbons, 25 percent less carbon monoxide, 33 percent less soot and 70 percent less smoke.
The new vehicles are the standard 12.5 metres in length and air conditioned, with a capacity of 43 seated and 22 standing.
Other new features Council’s more-recent additions to the fleet include anti-rattle doors, bench-style seats, and safety measures such as extra external lighting and a screen at the front door to make sure drivers can see children at the front of the bus.
The new buses will operate from Brisbane City Council’s Carina bus depot and service the city’s east from 2009/10.
The new fleet will replace retiring diesel buses at the Carina depot.
The first of the diesel buses will commence service on September 14, 2009, with the rest of the fleet coming on board by mid 2010.
The Lord Mayor’s delivery of the first 125 of 500 buses also saw the size of the city’s fleet reach 1,000 for the first time ever.
