Aussie uni expands campus bus service for student safety

The university says the service is especially valuable for international students unfamiliar with Darwin, offering peace of mind

Charles Darwin University (CDU) has expanded its intercampus bus service, introducing a new 28-seat bus aimed at improving transport access and safety for students travelling between campuses.

Operated by a contracted security officer, the new bus enhances a growing service that connects the Danala | Education and Community Precinct, UniLodge, and the Casuarina, Waterfront, and Palmerston campuses.

CDU student council vice-president Gilbert Tanoto says the service was an important step toward improving student wellbeing and reducing safety concerns.

“The CDU-supported bus provides a safe and reliable transport option, especially for students without personal vehicles,” Tanoto says.

“It reduces risks associated with walking alone at night, waiting at isolated bus stops, or relying on costly rideshares.”

He says the service is especially valuable for international students unfamiliar with Darwin, offering peace of mind and convenience after late classes.

CDU vice-chancellor Scott Bowman welcomed the service’s growth, noting that student feedback had been overwhelmingly positive since its launch in 2024.

“The CDU Bus Service is a fantastic solution for many, and the feedback we’ve received for the initiative to date has been strongly positive,” Bowman says.

“It gives our students the peace of mind they need to focus on their studies.”
