Auckland unveils NZ’s first all-electric double-decker open top bus

The first all-electric sightseeing bus in the country is running sustainable tourism services across Auckland City

The very first open-top, double-decker electric bus has been introduced in New Zealand courtesy of a tourism service in the country’s most populous city.

Auckland Explorer Bus has unveiled the groundbreaking model in the city to start the year as part of a new push for sustainable tourism.

Owned by Entrada Travel Group, Auckland Explorer Bus provides hop-on hop-off sightseeing tours round the city, with the new vehicle offering a zero-emissions travel experience.

The bright blue and yellow Auckland Explorer Bus took its maiden journey on January 23 and entered full-time service from January 28.

The new bus is owned and operated by New Zealand family owned Tranzit Group as a long-term fleet partner of Entrada Travel Group.

The three-axle electric bus was designed by Tranzit Group and includes 508kW of CATL batteries that provide more than 330km of range on a single charge.

This follows Tranzit Group having first introduced electric bus technology into New Zealand in 2018, with the group having since expanded its electric bus fleet and charging network throughout New Zealand’s north island.

It also allows Entrada Travel Group to further build on signing the New Zealand Tourism Sustainability Commitment in 2023 where it committed to modernising its fleet and transitioning to lower-emission vehicles across the business.
