Bus fares in the nation’s capital are set to increase next month
January 15, 2013
ACTION bus fares are set to increase for the first time since 2010.
The ACT Government announced yesterday most
bus fares will increase by five percent on February 4 and passengers will
also have to pay $5 for new or replacement MyWay electronic ticket cards.
According to government, the fee for new MyWay cards is intended to encourage people to recharge their card when it has run out of credit, rather than throwing it out.
As part of the fare increase,
a standard adult MyWay fare will increase from $2.52 to $2.65, while a concession MyWay fare will rise from $1.26 to $1.32.
School student fares will rise from 95c to $1 and on-bus cash fares will change from $4 to $4.20 and from $2 to $2.10 for concessions.
There will also be changes to monthly trip caps, which will increase from 36 to 40 for adults and concession holders, while the school student cap will rise from 26 to 30 under the new fare structure.
A Transport for Canberra statement says the changes reflect improvements made to the ACT’s public transport network and a rise in operating costs
in the past few years.
“The government continues to invest in the Territory’s public transport system by installing new bus shelters across Canberra, upgrading bus stops to comply with disability standards, purchasing new buses for the ACTION fleet and implementing the NXTBUS real time passenger information system,” the statement says.
The previous fares rise was in July 2010.
