Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill today officially launched a joint partnership with the West Australian Government to slash greenhouse emissions from the state's buses. Senator Hill says the federal government is providing up to $2.5 million for Western Australia to introduce 25 state-of-the-art compressed natural gas (CNG) buses using local technology. "These buses will be equipped with the very latest CNG technology developed by Advanced Engine Components Limited," Hill says. "This will drastically reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from buses in Western Australia. "The new buses will deliver greenhouse reductions of 587.5 tonnes annually or 10,575 tonnes over the 18-year life-span of the buses. "Advanced Engine Components here in Perth is continuing to refine its technology to enable us to tap our full potential in converting to gas and reducing greenhouse gas emissions." State Environment Minister Cheryl Edwardes says the Western Australian government is already using low sulphur fuel in its bus fleet. "This CNG conversion will add to a program of converting Western Australia's bus fleet to a cleaner, more environmentally friendly public transport service. "The bus fleet will be replaced over the next 10 years with Euro 2 level clean emission buses and we are working with a European manufacturer who is conducting a major trial on hydrogen fuel cell technology, which has zero emissions."
