GPS Online has installed the first GPS satellite tracking system into a commercial bus fleet in Sydney. The 70 vehicle Glenorie Bus Company fleet is using GPS satellite tracking linked to an on-vehicle data terminal with LCD messaging capability. The initial contract was valued at over $260,000 and includes a parallel voice communications system upgrade, supply, installation, commissioning and training. Managing director of Glenorie Bus Company, Keith Todd, says the system offers an opportunity to improve customer service through maximising utilisation of the bus fleet. Glenorie is using conventional two-way radio communications with high speed polling software system, developed by GPS Online. The software polls each vehicle in the fleet every 60 seconds, to gather updated data on the vehicle's location, speed and direction. Todd says the system benefits both staff and customers. It has been well received by drivers, who now have protection against unsubstantiated complaints of not adhering to timetables, through the system's replay and reporting features.
