The New South Wales government has announced it will create an independent review process for community road safety, following the recent deaths of children outside schools. Transport Minister Carl Scully says the review, and other safety measures to be implemented, are necessary because the Roads and Transport Authority has not been responsive enough to community concerns. He says an independent review process will be established to look over requests for safety improvements by schools and communities. "I want to ensure that requests of that nature are dealt with promptly and independently and the community is entitled to an assurance that their concerns will get a full hearing." At a cost of $1 million, Scully has established more 40 kilometre an hour zones and employed almost 7% more "lollipop" people. "I believe these measures will make a difference to the standard of road safety to hundreds of children in the state."
