The number of people using public transport in Queensland jumped by 7.3% in the last financial year, compared to a rise of only 2.5% in 1998/99. "This is a very welcome improvement in public transport use and indicates that policies and promotions to get people out of their cars are working," Transport and Main Roads Minister Steve Bredhauer says. "Through the TravelSmart campaign, the state government is committed to boosting access to public transport for all Queenslanders, in an effort to reduce urban traffic congestion and pollution and to boost quality of life for residents." Bredhauer says advances in public transport include the dedicated busways and new public transport interchanges, tenders for an integrated ticketing system, and the setting aside of $3 million to purchase another 50 wheelchair-accessible buses.
