A Queensland farmer has been jailed for two years for fraudently claiming diesel rebates of $20,000. Wayne Bourke of Kin Kin (north of Brisbane) pleaded guilty to two charges under the Crimes Act and was sentenced today in the Brisbane District Court. Between January 1998 and December 1999 he made 25 diesel rebate claims totalling $20,000 when he had not actually bought any diesel. He was also ordered to repay the Australian Tax Office $16,617. Second Tax Commissioner Jennie Granger said the sentence sent a strong message to those thinking of defrauding the Tax Office. In 2002/3 the ATO paid out $2.3 billion in diesel fuel rebate claims.
