The Roads to Recovery program has been cut by a third in the federal Budget. Funding for the program, which largely funds states and councils to upgrade rural roads and regional freight routes, has been cut from $300 million to $200 million in the 2002/03 financial year. The government claims it has not been cut as such, promising the $100 million will be aded to the subsequent year's budget. But John Ross from the Local Government Association says the cut is unfortunate because there is such a backlog of roads projects that can be funded through Roads to Recovery.
