Queensland's workers' compensation premium rates will stay at the lowest level in Australia for 2002/2003, Premier Peter Beattie says. The average rate in Queensland is 1.55%, following three cuts from the average rate of 2.145% when the Beattie government was elected in 1998. "At a time when other state workers' compensation authorities are in the red, Queensland's system is not only increasing its benefits to more workers, but improving its financial position and delivering the lowest average employer rates in Australia," Beattie says. The government has instigated a raft of reforms, including increasing maximum statutory lump sums and common law changes to allow more conciliation.
