People have only four days left to lodge their next quarterly Business Activity Statement (BAS) or Instalment Activity Statement (IAS). The deadline for the next quarterly BAS and IAS is Thursday, February 28. People needing help can call 13 24 78. Tax Commissioner Michael Carmody says it is important people call the Tax Office early to get help to meet the deadline. "We want to give people every opportunity to lodge on time before late lodgment penalties apply more broadly from the first activity statements due for the new financial year," Carmody says. "We are currently writing to people behind with their lodgments to help them tidy up their books as we don't want to see anyone face late-lodgment penalties. "Penalties will not be applied for one-off or isolated circumstances. "However, in order to deliver the integrity promised with the new tax system, we are moving into a new bedding-in phase where penalties will apply more broadly. "I recognise that even with the best intentions, events will arise that mean people will not always get it right. People genuinely doing the right thing will not be penalised for isolated slip ups." People can still call 13 24 78 to book a face-to-face visit with a field officer or get information at www.ato.gov.au.
