As part of the federal government's road safety "black spot" program, funding for an additional 89 projects across South Australia and Queensland have been announced. Queensland has had 171 road safety projects completed since 1996, and South Australia 52, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Senator Ron Boswell, says. "By the year 2002, more than $220 million would have been allocated to eliminate black spots around the nation, with priority given to locations with a history of serious road trauma," he says. Among South Australia's 24 new projects are the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of McKenzie and Hamblyn Roads in Elizabeth Downs, and the widening of the seal and improvements to the delineation of the Port Wakefield to Yorketown Road north of Ardrossan. Queensland's 65 new projects include the construction of a new roundabout in Rockhampton, widening of the Diamantina Developmental Road between Boulia and Dajarra, and installation of new traffic lights in Ipswich.
