Bus shines at QLD awards

Bus industry earns a few nods at the 2015 Queensland Road Safety Awards in Mackay

Brisbane Bus Lines and Australian Bus and Coach Drivers’ Guide author John Duffy were recognised at the 2015 Queensland Road Safety Awards in Mackay recently.

Brisbane Bus Lines and its business partner Strategix Training Group received a commendation in the Industry and Business Award section and John Duffy highly commended in the Fleet and Occupational Award section.

Brisbane Bus Lines operations manager Damian Dempster was applauded for a program he helped implement last year, aimed at improving road safety, developing the preventative safety skills of existing staff and ensuring its new drivers were trained in accordance with the latest industry best practice.

Each of its drivers participated in a risk-based defensive driving course, enrolled in a Certificate 111 in Driver Operations and the operator even created its own bus driver academy.

On the same occasion, Duffy was lauded for the creation of his drivers’ guide and was chuffed at the recognition he received on the night.

His book, which discusses the basic requirements for new bus drivers and covers more advanced and detailed skills for experienced the driver, has now been adopted by bus operators as a training device.

“I knew I had been nominated, but had no expectations really so it’s nice to be recognised in this way,” he says.

Duffy has been busy recently, assisting the Indonesian Government with its driver training plans and working on some non-bus related community engagement projects in Chinchilla.
